Dmoz Homepage Removed from Google

Doing a search on Google for the phrase Dmoz no longer brings up the homepage of the directory, you can check the search result by clicking on the following link:

Google have been coming down hard on directories recently and many of them have been penalized in the rankings, this looks to be something different though as the Dmoz homepage has just been flat out removed from the search results, check for the Google cache of the Dmoz homepage by clicking on the following link:

There have been a lot of people complaining about the corruption of Dmoz editors for quite some time now and this could be the reason why the homepage has disappeared from the index, check out Jeremy Schoemakers recent post on Dmoz extortion.

All in all I think this is a good thing, it was a nice idea but the directory has passed it’s sell by date, many of the categories contain broken links or links to parked domains and new business owners find it practically impossible to get listed most of the time because of the corruption.
